Mono_Lake_1.jpg

Mono Lake is a hypersaline lake in Mono County, CA, US, which formed approximately 750,000 years ago. The pH and salt levels are extraordinarily high - it is roughly twice as salty as an ocean. The objects coming up out of the water are tufas, which are limestone formations that grow underwater. They are exposed now due to water diversions which began in 1941. This photo was taken from the south side of the lake where most of the tufas are, looking east before the sun rose.
